Moving out on $1100 a month

2020.09.09 07:58 SpikeTops Moving out on $1100 a month

So my family has been really emotionally abusive to me for so long. I’m 22 and I’m trans and gay. They treat me like shit because of it and it feels horrible. I work at Starbucks right now and I’m working toward a promotion to get me $1500/ month. But right now I’m making $1100 with tips that vary week to week. I live in Westchester, NY. COVID lead to the housing here being so expensive with people moving to the city. My partner isn’t ready to move in since she didn’t get her job yet. I made a budget with what I would pay and I only save $200 a month after bills. I’m so stressed and want to succeed and be away from my parents but I just don’t know what to do and I need so much help.

2020.08.23 00:01 Rabble_In_Arms How long is your commute?

I've been recently looking into moving to another part of the region I live in (NYC) but doing so will constitute a large increase to my commute time. I'm wondering how long your average commutes are and how the longer commutes might impact your work habits.
Currently, I live and work out on Long Island and, frankly, want off. I'm fine with my job but hate living here. We've looked into the Bronx (where my partner works at a different school as a librarian in a more traditional 9-5 schedule) and southern Westchester, which would set me at a 1 - 1 1/2 hour drive depending on traffic. If I work at it, I can be on campus as little as 3 days a week, but currently am here 4 days a week. I've been hemming over whether putting up with a long commute would be worth waking up in a place I like each day, especially in the summer.
There are also other factors too like tolls (it cost my partner around 2,000 a year to drive over the bridge off long island to work, this would be a much smaller expense if I did it less often with the summers at home), but now I'm mostly curious about how those of you with drives like this have acclimated.
No, transit is not an option (unfortunately).

2020.08.01 16:58 PhillipCrawfordJr Did The Mafia Blackmail FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover About Being Gay?

M. Wesley Swearingen, an FBI agent from 1951 to 1977, writes in his memoir FBI Secrets: An Agent's Expose about the long-standing rumors within the Bureau concerning the relationship between FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and Associate Director Clyde Tolson which include allegations that Hoover ignored the Mafia for decades because the wise guys had incriminating goods on the supposed lovers:
One year after arriving in Memphis, Hoover transferred me to Chicago, Illinois. I was thrilled – my mind was full of gangsters, Tommy guns, and the FBI's famous machine gun battles of the 1930s. It was clear to me from Chicago's newspaper headlines that gangsters ruled a Chicago underworld element in the 1950s because gangland style murders averaged close to 100 a year in the Chicago area. * * * But when I told my colleague and veteran agent Vince Coll of my big plans for Chicago, he said that Hoover did not recognize the existence of a mob in Chicago. According to Coll, Mafia leader Meyer Lansky's organization had enough on Hoover and Tolson, as closet homosexuals, that Hoover would never investigate the mob.
The allegations were fleshed out in Official and Confidential: the Secret Life of J. Edgar Hoover by Anthony Summer. A review of the book ("Partners For Life") by Sidney Urquhart for Time magazine summarizes one alleged incident as follows:
Perhaps Summers' most bizarre revelation is an account provided by Susan Rosenstiel, the wife of a liquor distiller and gambling crony. Rosenstiel recalls attending what she thought would be an elegant private party at New York City's Plaza Hotel in the company of lawyer Roy Cohn, Hoover and others. Instead, Cohn introduced Rosenstiel to a woman named "Mary," dressed in a fluffy black dress, lace stockings and high heels. It was obvious Mary was no woman. "You could see where he shaved. It was Hoover," said Rosenstiel. Joined by Cohn, Hoover stripped down to a tiny garter belt and proceeded to have sex with two young boys. Cohn later joked about the evening. "That was really something, wasn't it, with Mary Hoover?"
The "two young boys" with whom Hoover allegedly had sex perhaps were provided by Ed "the Skull" Murphy who was a long-time Genovese associate involved in the crime family's gay bar and boy prostitution rackets in New York City. In Stonewall: The Riots That Sparked The Gay Revolution, David Carter writes:
John Paul Ranieri, a former prostitute interviewed for this history, provided critical testimony for corroborating and better understanding the larger implications of Murphy's criminal enterprises for gay history. Ranieri said that as a youth from Westchester County he had been forced by blackmail and Mafia-supplied drugs into a prostitution ring in which he remained active for three years before he escaped the mob's control. He claimed that a number of youths in the ring had disappeared after they got careless with talk, for while most of the customers were more or less average homosexual men with money, the regular clientele, according to Ranieri, also included famous men such as Malcolm Forbes, Cardinal Spellman, Liberace, U.S. Senators, a vice president of the United States, one of the most famous rock musicians, and J. Edgar Hoover. The mob's order, according to Ranieri, was strictly "Keep your zipper open and your mouth shut."
Ranieri said that he met J. Edgar Hoover at private parties at the Plaza Hotel and that Hoover's name was never mentioned. Hoover was always in drag, and Ranieri said he could tell that the FBI director was sure that no one recognized him. Ranieri said that he had ensured his own survival by having in his possession a photograph of himself with Hoover, given to him by the photographer.
How does the preceding information link Ed Murphy with J. Edgar Hoover? The connection is made evident in a news story written shortly after Hoover's homosexuality and transvestism became public. When [Anthony] Summer's book [Official and Confidential: The Secret Life of J. Edgar Hoover], was published [in 1993], a newspaper story about the 1960s national homosexual blackmail ring suddenly appeared after a quarter of a century of silence on the subject. Without mentioning Murphy's name, it quoted law enforcement sources who had worked on the case as saying that their investigation into the nationwide blackmail ring had turned up a photograph of Hoover "posing amiably" with the racket's ringleader and had uncovered information that Clyde Tolson, Hoover's lover, had himself "fallen victim to the extortion ring." After federal agents joined the investigation, both the photograph of Hoover and the documents about Tolson disappeared. * * * Very suggestive in this context is that Murphy would publicly say in 1978—before it became public information, as it did in the 1990s, that the Mafia had photographs of Hoover involved in sex acts—that he knew that J. Edgar Hoover "was one of my sisters."
Murphy's boys did have a habit of disappearing. For example, one Puerto Rican youth known as Tano with whom Murphy was sexually involved was kidnapped right off the streets never to be seen again according to one eyewitness to the incident as recounted by Carter in Stonewall.
Curiously, Murphy also was a long-standing FBI informant according to a May 8, 1978 article ("Skull Murphy: The Gay Double Agent") by Arthur Bell for The Village Voice. Indeed, this article contained the interview in which Murphy expressly speaks of J. Edgar Hoover as one of his "sisters": "He was the biggest fuckin' extortionist in this country. He had presidents by the balls. He had a record on everybody and his brother."
The allegations that Meyer Lansky had incriminating evidence against the FBI Director are particularly credible in light of the relationships among all the parties with political fixer Roy Cohn -- a fellow closet case who died of AIDS in 1986 -- at the center of it all.
Cohn was a personal friend of Hoover during the 1950s and 1960s, and the two shared extensive correspondence directed to each other on a first-name basis including a September 1957 exchange on an article published by the Director entitled "Let's Wipe Out the Schoolyard Sex Racket." Ironically, only months earlier an apparent obscenity indictment against Cohn had been dismissed according to an FBI memo dated June 28, 1957 from Assistant Director Louis B. Nichols to Clyde Tolson:
Roy Cohn called 6-27-57 to advise that Neil Gallagher of the New Jersey Turnpike Commission represented him in connection with the return of an indictment charging the sale of obscene literature. Gallagher went before the Superior Court judge in Union County, New Jersey, Thursday afternoon and moved the dismissal of the indictment. The district attorney joined him in this recommendation and issued a public apology to Cohn.
Cornelius "Neil" Gallagher later became a U.S. Congressman from Bayonne, NJ until he lost the seat in 1972 after Life magazine ran an article alleging mob ties.
The relationship between Hoover and Cohn is particularly troubling given that the FBI was fully aware that Cohn had ties to the most powerful bosses in the Mafia. For example, in 1964 federal prosecutor Robert Morgenthau was trying Cohn on corruption charges, and at the trial introduced excerpts of earlier grand jury testimony by Cohn. A March 27, 1964 article from The New York Times which the FBI contemporaneously clipped for its files on Cohn states:
The excerpts contained admissions by Mr. Cohn that he was acquainted with Geralde (Jerry) Catena, described by the Senate Rackets Committee as "No. 2 Man" in the Vito Genovese unit of the Cosa Nosta, and with Meyer Lansky, gangster. Mr. Cohn said he scarcely knew Lansky but that he had played golf two or three times with Catena.
Cohn further had represented the Stork Club which was Hoover's favorite stomping ground and Schenley Industries which was one of the country's largest liquor distillers. Louis Rosensteil was the president of Schenley Industries, and he had close ties to Meyer Lansky and Frank Costello. "In fact, on several occassions, Hoover was seen at the Stork Club fraternizing with people like Costello and Rosensteil" according to Peter J. Devico in The Mafia Made Easy. After Hoover's right-hand man Louis Nichols left the FBI in 1957, Cohn allegedly secured him a plum job making $100,000 a year at Schenley Industries although Nichols insisted in Hooveresque fashion that Rosensteil shunned the mob.
Of couse, the best evidence that Meyer Lansky had the goods on the FBI Director is that the storied agency never laid a hand on the gangster who was a bootleg kingpin during Prohibition, later founded Murder Inc., and finally ran gambling operations in Las Vegas and Havana, Cuba for the Genovese family. At the time of Lansky's death in 1983 the FBI estimated that he had a net worth of $300 million, and yet during his long criminal career the G-men never nailed him on a single charge or recovered a single penny. Indeed, the FBI did not even start a file on Lansky until the 1950s, and a review of the file's sparse contents illustrates that the agency's efforts to target him -- a purported top hoodlum -- were half-hearted at best involving little more than the occasional wiretap and a sometimes surveillance. Indeed, the newspaper articles on Lansky which the FBI clipped were more informative on the mobster's activities than the investigator reports. Ironically, Lansky only was arrested in 1972 -- the same year Hoover died -- as a result of an IRS investigation involving an alleged skimming scheme from a Vegas casino, and even that indictment conveniently was dismissed because Lansky was considered too ill to prosecute.

2020.07.12 21:10 MaxDemonNoir Talking about a character's drastic changes in The Two Prime Universe's

So I want to make this obvious, I have created two universes which I call my Two Prime Universes, The Madcliffe Universe (named after the very beginning, I drummed up an idea for a show in which the supernatural was open and known to the public and it was called Madcliffe after the town featured within) and The WestChester Universe (named after another show which i drummed up after dozens of other of shows for the Madcliffe Universe and I thought, a universe in which the supernatural is not public and named the show WestChester after the town its primarily set within.) And now I have expanded with massive amounts of lore for each universe. I have other Universe's but these are the primary ones.
Now for the character I mentioned in the header and that person is Kate Hurley.
WESTCHESTER UNIVERSE
Kate is a top S.I.D agent having work for the division for over 13 years, she is well known and well respected. Despite that she has a reputation of being cold hearted and sometimes a bitch, though she is like this because of what happened in 1994 coupled with the fact that she is afraid of letting people in and puts off a somewhat "toxic" exterior.
Despite all that she is clearly close with her partner Darrian Beasley, they are almost always seen joking with each other and they both obviously trust each other deeply and when Darrian was shot twice thanks to her, Kate became extremely agitated and then very upset which people noted as being very weird for her to have shown great emotion.
She grew up on a big farm in Kansas and lived there until 1994 when she had turned 19, that was also the year her brother was supposedly abducted by aliens. (Now do note, aliens? Yes aliens and why she did join the B.E.O is for the simple fact that it was heavily private in this universe while S.I.D was more known in some ways, so she did not know of it).
In 2015 special agent Kate Hurley left the FBI after finding her brother and discovering what had happened to him, he had been taken in by the government not by aliens. When Kate left she changed her life, she dyed her hair to a dark brown, changed her name to Callie Macbrady, moved to a small rural town in Ireland and even got engaged.
However in 2018 tragedy struck when Adriana Adelson was killed, Adriana was a member of S.I.D since 2009 and had gotten to known Kate in a more personal way, Kate when hearing of the news broke off her engagement and went back to America where she shortly got her old life and old job back. No one knew where Kate fled to, Darrian came to her apartment and found a propped up note "Dear agent or friend who reads, I'm sorry, I'm sorry for abandoning my friends and Division, I'm sorry for not saying goodbye properly but after what we all found out about my brother it just...it hurt me deeply. I have moved out of the U.S and I am starting a new life in a new country, I cant tell you where I will go or who I will become but do know I love all my friends the same and I will miss you all dearly, Forever Yours Special Agent Kate Hurley".
Her fiance, Sean O'Grady took the engagement hard and when he learned that Callie was really an american woman, he became enraged and went to america to track Kate down at which lead to a fateful encounter in Kate's new apartment where Sean shot her twice. She luckily survived and Sean was shortly arrested after a shootout. Sadly in 2020 when investigating a vampire cult in Norway, she was killed by original vampire Bernhold Bjorström.
MADCLIFFE UNIVERSE
The Kate Hurley in the Madcliffe Universe was instead apart of the B.E.O and she was also abducted by aliens in 1994 which lead her to being left with a greater sense of life and a larger outlook, she would later be invited into the B.E.O in 2013 following her viewing B.E.O agents taking care of a alien, she went through a year and 6 moths of training to become a agent. She was a agent from 2014 to 2032 when she was appointed director and remained director from 2032 to 2060.
This Kate was alot less bitchy and cold and instead compassionate, kind, and very intuitive though still witty along with the fact that she was a great B.E.O agent and director. She married Charlie Moore in 2015, a fellow B.E.O agent, and in 2016 gave birth to twin girls, Sierra and Lilah. This Kate Hurley died in 2060 when possessed by a ancient powerful alien that drained her body of energy and she was over 80 so she didn't have much energy left.
The Kate Hurley of the WestChester Universe is a rough and tough, cold, stoic bitch who is dedicated to the job (albeit a bit much at time) while holding no value over her emotions and the emotions of others and doesn't hold great value over family values while the Madcliffe Universe Kate Hurley is a warm, compassionate, kind intuitive woman who is committed to the job but her feelings and emotions of herself and others often get in the way alongside her family values. Another shocking alteration is that she doesn't have a brother named John Hurley but a sister named Joan Hurley, yes in this universe Kate has a sister instead of brother. Also yes this Kate was actually abducted by aliens and was returned 3 days later, her sister was never inducted into the government and became a hotshot lawyer in Washington D.C who primarily represented the supernatural.

2020.05.29 05:52 yinyang91 28 [M4F] New York City - Looking for Someone to Call Home

Just like the subject says, can you call my house? Lmao jk.

Seriously. It’s been about 12 years since I last dated and I feel like I have no damn clue how to go about it. What I was doing in-between those years? I was making myself a better person than I was yesterday. Looking between then and now, holy shit! My younger self will not believe it.

About Me:
I am a 28-year-old guy who lives in NYC since the day I was born. I am 5’6” (168cm), if that matters to you. My nationality is Puerto Rican (I understand Spanish more than I can speak it). Outside of that basic info, I am someone who is introverted, yet I open up the more I get comfortable with you. Sometimes you’ll forget I am introverted in the first place. I am an open minded person. I was born with technology in my blood lol.
I currently do have a full-time job (I am not an essential worker). I do not have children, but I may want them in the future. If the intro wasn’t obvious, yes, I am single.

Soo what are my interests?
Here’s a TL:DR list of my interests.
  1. Computers (more hardware related than software. Basically IT related.)
  2. Video Games (Sonic the Hedgehog, Destiny 2 are my few favorites. There is more to list.)
  3. Photography (Consider it as a hobby. Can’t say I’m an amateur nor a pro. You will be the judge.)
  4. Traveling (don’t have a passport yet, but there are a couple of places on my bucket list.)
  5. Trains (I barely brag about it, but my Instagram says otherwise)
  6. Sunsets. I’m a sucker for sunsets.

What do I look for in a partner?
I believe that is all of it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I hope you live in NYC or nearby NYC (places like Long Island, Jersey City, Hoboken, Westchester, and Connecticut). I would love to meet you in person sometime soon (soon as in when this pandemic is officially over).
I am not a long distance relationship type of guy, but hey, who knows the love of my life is outside of NYC. Possibly somewhere in the US. Maybe even outside the US.
If any of this sparks your interest, please message me on here! Don’t hesitate. I don’t bite (unless you’re into that kind of thing lol).
If you’re not interested, I thank you for reading this and I hope the rest of your week goes well! And I hope you’re staying safe from all of this.
On the off chance that you live in the Hollywood, California zone, you can type in Medical Coding School in Los Angeles, or Medical Coding College in Los Angeles, in Google to find a school by you. 2020.04.30 23:27 AshleighBSB [Boarding School Blues] - Chapter 17: The Uninvited Guest
[Cover] [Table Of Contents] [Chapter 1] [Patreon] [Discord]
(This chapter begins the next book in the series, Boarding School Boyfriends.)
I can’t believe it has been six weeks since I first stepped foot onto the Hartfield campus. I feel as if I have been here forever. My roommate, Sarah, is as close to me as a sister. Her boyfriend, Larry, and my best friend, Walter, are closer to me than my real brother. Hartfield has become my home and they are my family.
Next weekend, my real family will be visiting for Parents’ Weekend. Although I love them, they are not part of my Hartfield home and just the thought of having them here makes me nervous. Will they embarrass me in front of my friends or teachers? Will they disapprove of my friends? Will they think the work is too difficult and make me want to come home?
“So, I like have a question for you.”
Melinda looked up from her writing journal to see her best friend, Walter, turning red. They were the only ones in the science center lounge during their free fourth period that Saturday morning, since their other two best friends, Sarah and Larry, had decided to go for a walk in the crisp October air. Melinda raised her eyebrows and gestured for Walter to continue.
“There's like this girl in my math class. She used to like sit across the room, but the other day, after I sat down, she like came to sit with me. And like she did it again today.”
“And, what? You like don’t want her to sit with you?”
“She like spent most of class asking me questions. I can’t tell if she likes me or if she like just wants me to help her with her work.”
“You’re not like seriously thinking of asking her out.”
Walter looked at the ground. “Maybe.”
“Walter! You just broke up with Bella like three days ago.”
“So? As I recall, you started seeing Eliot like the day after you broke up with Mike.”
“I did not. I started talking to him again. Besides, I’ve known him since like the sixth grade. Do you even know this girl’s name?”
“Ava…something. I forgot her last name. I’m not sure I like ever knew it.”
“What else do you know about her?”
“She’s kind of cute.”
“You know I have to like approve her before she becomes your girlfriend.”
“A pact is a pact.”
“Why don’t we like go to the mall tomorrow? I’ll invite Eliot. You know Sarah and Larry will join us. Are there like any movies playing that don’t star a member of your family?”
Walter pretended to glare at Melinda, but she was asking a serious question. Two weeks ago, he had confided in her that his father was Adam Evans from the Grammy award-winning band, CAVEmen. As if that wasn’t enough his mother was none other than Kara McGregor, the famous Hollywood actress. His sister, Meghan McGregor, had graduated last year and was taking a break from acting, having nearly as many screen credits as her mother. Meanwhile, Walter’s older brother, Patrick McGregor, was currently filming a movie in Hawaii and would be returning to school at the end of the month. Walter’s biggest fear was that his classmates would treat him differently if they found out his secret.
“I think I’d rather just like go hang out at the mall.”
“Works for me. I’ll text Eliot after classes.”
Sunday afternoon, Melinda walked to the MacMillan Activities Center with her roommate, not surprised to see Larry and Walter already there. As the bus pulled up, Walter waved to someone up the path and a petite girl with her long blonde hair tied in an elegant French braid bounced next to them. She was wearing tight jeans and an even tighter pink sweater that flattered her slender frame. She smiled at Walter and waved at the group.
“Hi! I’m Ava.”
Walter pointed to each of his friends as he introduced them. “Ava, these are my friends. Larry lives like across the hall from me. Sarah is his girlfriend and Melinda is her roommate.”
Melinda followed her friends onto the bus where they sat in the back corner. Larry and Sarah sat together with Walter and Ava in front of them, while Melinda sat across the aisle.
“So, where's Eliot meeting us?” Walter asked as they bus pulled away from the curb.
“He said like the food court and to like eat without him if he’s late.”
Walter gave Melinda a thumbs up and began a quiet conversation with Ava. Sarah and Larry had been whispering since they boarded the bus. Melinda felt a little lonely as she looked out the window at the passing houses.
About twenty minutes later, the bus pulled up to the mall and Melinda followed her friends inside the building. Ava never stopped talking.
“I just love the mall. I like could live here. I spent like most of my long weekend at the mall. Of course, this one’s like not that big. The one near me is ike one of the biggest in the country. Well, like in the top ten. It has so many stores that you like can’t find elsewhere.”
“Where are you from?” Sarah asked.
“Not far from Westchester. New York.”
“Oh, there’s Eliot.” Melinda pointed to a boy sitting at a table at the entrance of the food court.
“Why is he like meeting us here?” Ava asked Melinda led the way to the table.
“He lives in town. Ava, this is Eliot. Eliot, this is Ava. You’ve met everyone else.”
Eliot eyed Walter cautiously as he waved to the group. Melinda had a feeling the arm he put around her shoulders was supposed to be a warning to Walter. The last time they were all together, Eliot grew very jealous of the fact that Walter was one of Melinda's best friends. Melinda tried to ease the tension.
“So, who’s hungry?”
Eliot squeezed Melinda's shoulder gently. “Hey. Anyone like want to try that Asian buffet restaurant I saw on the map?”
Ava inhaled loudly. “Speaking of Asian buffets, there is this AMAZING restaurant at like my local mall. You like put all the food you want into a bowl and they like cook it in a wok right there in front of you. It is soooo good.”
“Well, I’m pretty sure this one is like just a regular buffet.”
Walter shrugged. “I’m always up for a good buffet.”
Larry shook his head. “Of course you are, bro.” He managed to dodge Walter’s playful punch as he ran towards the escalator.
Melinda had been to several buffets in her hometown, but this one was by far the largest she had ever seen. It looked to her as if they had cooked every single option on a take out menu. There were two very long hot bars, an equally long cold bar, and a dessert bar with ice cream, fruit, and some items Melinda could not readily identify. It smelled delicious.
Melinda was the first to return to the table with her plate, Eliot sitting beside her a moment later.
“So, any chance we can like get together this week? How does tomorrow look?”
Melinda shrugged. “I have tap. I am like really enjoying this new class. It’s so much fun. Oh, but Tuesday might work.”
Eliot shook his head. “Math competition. You’ll never guess where.”
“Where?”
“West Shore.”
“No way. Our West Shore?”
Eliot nodded. “Yup. My parents are going to like meet me there. Take me out to like dinner or something then bring me back to my aunt’s house.”
“I wonder if like anyone we know is on the team. You’ll have to tell me.”
“Drew probably like made the team.”
“Of course. He’s in like, precalc, isn’t he?”
Eliot nodded. “And I’m willing to bet like Rosa did, too.”
Melinda scrunched her nose. “I don’t think so. She was like really struggling last year.”
Ava pouted. “I don't get it.”
Melinda smiled. “West Shore is like the high school in our hometown.”
“You mean like the private school you two used to attend?”
Melinda shook her head. “No. The public high school.”
“Really? You went to like public school? Like on TV?”
Melinda and Eliot exchanged confused looks as they nodded.
“What was that like? I’ve never been.”
Melinda had no idea how to explain the differences between her old school and Hartfield, but Bella continued without waiting for a response. “I’ve been in private schools since, like, preschool.”
Melinda tried to show an interest. “Is this your first boarding school?”
Bella nodded as she sipped her water. “Yeah. My parents had mentioned it like once or twice when I was younger, but I didn’t want to like leave home. But then they mentioned Hartfield and I like couldn’t resist. I mean, this is like one of the best schools in the country. Do you know how many celebrities like send their kids here? I mean, think of the opportunities. You could like meet someone famous and make amazing networking connections. And the classes! I mean, it’s hard, but I know it will like help me get into a great college.”
Walter started playing with the food on his plate, not actually eating it, a sure sign something was bothering him. He turned to Ava. “Do you know what kind of college you like want to go to? Like, what you want to study?”
“Not really. My parents are doctors and I think they like want me to go into medicine. But, I’m like really squeamish. I would love to like go to art school, but I know there’s like not really much you can do with an art degree.”
“Oh, are you an artist?” Eliot asked.
“No, not really. I mean, I can like doodle a little, but I can't like draw. I want to study like art history and there's like not much you can do with that. Maybe like work in a museum?”
Everyone agreed that they could not think of many careers that would necessitate a degree in art history, which led to a general discussion of careers they might like to pursue after college. Melinda was clueless what she wanted to do, but she did like ruling out some of the options posed, especially by the boys.
After lunch, they roamed the mall, Ava going into any store that might possibly sell shoes. While Sarah gleefully joined her, Melinda and the boys had little interest in shoe shopping and soon grew bored. In the third store, Walter turned to Eliot.
“Melinda thinks Molly is just like pretending to be infected with the vampire parasite.”
Eliot seemed to understand Walter was referring NeoGenesis, a television show the three of them enjoyed watching. He shook his head as he turned back to Melinda. “Sorry, but you're wrong.”
Melinda smiled, enjoying the fact that she often caught nuances that were missed by not only her friends, but also the two faculty advisors who ran the school NeoGenesis Science Fiction Club.
“Molly’s just pretending. Like she didn’t actually eat the bloody steak and then she like said she would help her mother, but she didn’t like actually do it. And that last scene Friday? When Doc was like running all those blood tests and he’s surprised? We’re supposed to think he just found out Molly has the parasite, but I think he’s going to find that Molly’s like immune. Then he’ll use her blood to like make an antidote.”
Walter shrugged. “You’re wrong.”
Eliot nodded. “Yeah. I’m gonna have to like agree with Walter on this one.”
Melinda just rolled her eyes. “You’ll see.”
That night, Melinda walked into her usual library study room, not surprised to see Walter sitting in his usual place at the study table with his pile of books to his left. On his right, however, where he usually put his books, sat Ava, who was flipping through a math book, presumably to find that night’s homework assignment. Melinda took her place across from Walter and began removing her books from her bag.
“Hi!” Ava responded in a chipper tone. “Walter said I could like join you guys. I hope that’s okay.”
Melinda nodded Ava was not Walter’s first girlfriend to join her study group, but it still felt strange to have someone new invading their space. The awkwardness continued when Melinda realized Walter was doing tonight’s math assignment with Ava, even though he had completed it with Melinda Friday night. Melinda decided to say nothing, working on tomorrow night’s assignment, without Walter checking for mistakes as he usually did.
They all finished around the same time and Melinda took out her Latin book. Ava made a face of disgust.
“Ugh. Isn’t Latin boring? I mean, like no one speaks it.”
“Mr. Henderson does,” Melinda replied. “And the other Latin teacher, too. I like caught them speaking Latin to each other in the hallway one day.”
“Oh, I know who you mean!” Walter exclaimed.
“I think French is just like so much more practical,” Ava’s prissy tone was borderline whining. “I mean, like most of the world speaks it.”
Melinda did not think this statement was entirely true. She recalled her geography teacher last year had listed the top ten most widely spoken languages on the board. Melinda remembered seeing Chinese and Spanish near the top of the list and could not recall French being there at all.
Melinda did not want to pick a fight with Ava, however, so she simply opened her book to the assigned translation and began working on it in silence. Ava took a book out of her bag and brought it to read in one of the comfy chairs while Walter took out his Latin notebook and began the assignment with Melinda.
Walter had already finished his translation and was working on the review questions by the time Melinda finished writing out the English version of the passage. Walter stole her paper and read what she had written, using a pencil to circle some of her words.
“We haven’t learned passive yet, so you like can’t say the book was held by Cornelia. You have to say Cornelia was holding the book.”
“But, book comes first.” Melinda pointed to the sentence in her text.
“Yes, but book is like in the accusative case and Cornelia is nominative.”
Melinda shook her head as she crossed off her sentence and re-wrote Walter’s. She knew he was right and understood it after he explained it to her, but she was uncertain how she was expected to remember that on her own for her next quiz.
Melinda sulked through her Latin assignment, frustrated with herself for continuing to make these careless mistakes in her translations. Eventually, however, she had completed the questions and was ready to move on to her English homework. She read her syllabus and glanced at Walter.
“I forgot we were like done with the myths! I don’t have Odyssey.”
Walter glanced at his phone to check the time. “Well, you could probably like go find it downstairs in the stacks. But, you won’t be able to like mark it while you read.”
Melinda likewise checked the time on her phone, then glanced over at Ava. “Nah, I think I’ll just like go read it in my room. We can talk about it tomorrow.”
“Okay,” Walter looked a little sad as Melinda began to pack up her books. “I’ll text you later.”
Melinda glanced at Ava, who was clearly watching her while pretending to read her French book. “I’ll probably be too engrossed in Odyssey. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Melinda felt bad as she walked out of the room and slowly headed back to her dorm. She still had about twenty minutes before the break between the two study hours, but she had felt so uncomfortable in that room. Ava’s presence had changed the dynamic between her and Walter, and she was not sure how she felt. She changed into pajamas and brought her book to read in the lounge, knowing she would fall asleep reading in her bed.
As she got comfortable on the couch, she watched people milling about around her. Larry had waved as he entered the dorm and headed towards the staircase, presumably to visit with Sarah. When the library closed, Ava and Walter sat huddled in a corner of the common room talking in quiet whispers. Melinda was happy for him, but there was a pang of jealousy as well. It was not a romantic envy but rather a resentment that someone was stealing her friend and study partner. She was able to acknowledge that to herself as she began to tune everyone out and read about a woman named Penelope. She was being courted by many suitors. Walter and Eliot were dining at the table and starring at Penelope, who bore a striking resemblance to Ava, when she was gently shaken awake by her prefect, Adrienne. Somehow, she had fallen asleep while reading the first book of Odyssey and it had become part of a really strange dream.
Wednesday night, Melinda rushed into the library just as study hours were beginning. She was not surprised to see Ava again sitting beside Walter, as she had been studying with him every night this week. As she emptied the contents of her bag onto the table, Walter looked up.
“Hey. You missed supper.”
“I grabbed dinner in town with Eliot.”
“Where did you go?” There was something about Ava’s tone that Melinda did not like, but she couldn’t quite figure out what bothered her. She shrugged it off.
“There’s this Chinese takeout like down the hill. They have a couple of tables, so we like got our food and stayed there until like his aunt picked him up.” She turned to Walter. “How was your game?”
“We won. Larry got a touchdown. I tackled someone.”
“Fun.” Melinda turned to Ava. “Did you get to watch?”
Ava wrinkled her nose in disgust. “Football is a barbaric sport. I did my nails. There’s like no salon in town. I cannot wait to go home. Get them done like properly.”
Melinda glanced at the pea green polish and shrugged a shoulder. “They look nice to me.”
Walter changed the subject. “Football has been like really time consuming lately, so I’m trying to get like a little ahead on my homework.” He sent a Melinda a pointed look.
Although Melinda’s ex-boyfriend had turned out to be a creep, he was the one who had given Melinda the idea to do her homework at least one night ahead. Since she studied with Walter nearly every evening, he had been doing the same. That had stopped when he started seeing Ava. When Melinda didn’t challenge his excuse, Walter continued.
“I finished like all my homework due tomorrow, so I’m going to like start working on tomorrow night’s assignments. But, I can like still help you with your math, Ava.”
Ava’s response had a sour note that Melinda wasn't sure Walter even noticed. “I think I’ll like work on French.” Ava took the book from her bag and brought it to read on the comfy chair. Meanwhile, Melinda wordlessly began working on the first geometry problem.
Melinda had completed about three problems when Ava slammed her book shut and huffed back to the study table, giving an exasperated sigh as she returned to her seat.
“Ugh. French is like so BOR-ing. I think I just read like four different ways for Pierre to buy food. Pierre is shopping. Pierre is buying food. Pierre wants to go to the grocery store. My mind is like numb. I need a study break.”
Melinda smiled to herself as she glanced surreptitiously at her watch, calculating it had taken Ava approximately fifteen minutes to grow weary of her French assignment. Ignoring the interruption, Melinda continued working on her math, leaving Walter to handle his girlfriend’s boredom. Ava turned to Walter with a knowing smile.
“So, I’ve told my parents like all about you and we were thinking maybe you and your parents could like join us for dinner Friday night.”
Melinda glanced at her friend, who was turning bright red. He seemed completely dumbstruck and unable to speak, especially since he opened and closed his mouth a few times with no words coming out. Melinda tried not to giggle at her friend’s predicament and instead, with a sigh, decided to rescue him.
“Your parents are coming in Friday? That’ll be nice. My parents have been like really busy with work and like all my little brother’s activities. They can’t make it Friday night. They’re only coming for like the day on Saturday.”
Walter seemed to recover enough to agree with Melinda. “Yeah, you know what? I haven’t like talked to my parents, but, my brother and sisterlike both need them more than me right now. And, they’re both like really busy with work, too. I’m not sure if they’re coming. I might be free for like dinner with you and your parents. I have to like check the football schedule.”
Walter looked as if he was eating a lemon as he agreed to dinner, but he managed to turn his wince into a half-smile.
“Why don’t you like want to introduce me to your parents?” Ava sent Walter a pout so perfect, Melinda was sure it had been practiced.
“It’s not that. I just like really don’t think they’re going to be able to make it.”
“They like didn’t even come for Long Weekend,” Melinda reminded him. “I remember. You like took the bus down and…someone else brought you back.” Melinda thought it best not to mention Walter had gotten a ride back to campus from his famous siblings.
“See, that’s like pretty normal for my parents,” Walter continued. “They like both have really demanding careers and they find it difficult to come to things like Parents’ Weekend. When my sister was a student, I came to like every Parents’ Weekend. My mom like came once, my dad came…nope. I usually came with my grandparents. Pop-Pop is an alum and like loves coming here. I think the only time like my parents were both here at the same time may have been like my sister’s graduation. No, wait. There was one other time. There was like a bouncy house… Reunion Weekend, maybe? Probably.”
Melinda stared at Walter, wondering if he realized he had just revealed so much personal information about his guarded family life. He had just opened himself up to questions about his parents or his siblings, but instead, Ava had an opinion on the situation.
“That’s like so sad. That your parents care more about lik=their work than visiting you.”
“Oh, no. It’s nothing like that. They just have to like travel a lot and can’t always be in Connecticut. But, we talk on the phone like literally every night. Actually talking, too, since my parents don’t like to text. And, I text my brother and sister like almost every day. Video chat with them like at least once a week. We just don’t like see each other a lot.”
“Well, my parents are like taking time off from work to come visit me.” Ava’s tone was so subtly snotty that Melinda did not think Walter seemed to notice. “And, we’d like if you could join us for dinner Friday night. Think about it. Poor Ma-Wah.”
Melinda watched Ava return to the study chair with her French book as she mentally tried to translate the butchered French, eventually shaking her head and returning to her math homework. After a few silent moments, Walter asked, “Are you having any trouble with question two? I think I like added something wrong.”
“Probably, since it’s a proof and there’s like nothing to add.”
Walter glared at her as he stole her page and checked his answer against hers, crossing something off on his own page. “I meant, I liked added something into the proof wrong. And I did. But, so did you. It’s the converse of the corresponding angles postulate. You wrote C.A.P. You did it right, you just like wrote it wrong.”
Ava was suddenly sitting beside Walter again as he returned Melinda’s paper. When they finished their math and began their physics, Ava decided to do the assignment with them. Unfortunately, she was in regular physics, not honors, and was using a completely different textbook, so the three of them worked quietly, with Melinda occasionally asking Walter for help with a problem.
By the time Melinda and Walter finished their Latin homework, study hours was nearly over. Ava, who had been busy writing in her English reflections journal, glanced up when she noticed Melinda and Walter packing their books for the evening.
“Oh, is it finally break time?” She checked the time.
“Nearly,” Melinda responded. “It’s too late to like start another subject before the library closes.”
“Oh, good. I like need a break.” Since Melinda had only seen Ava flip through her French book and doodle in her reflections journal, Melinda could not exactly determine why Ava needed a break. She held her tongue as the phrase Don’t be snide; keep it inside drifted across her memory.
“Why are you smiling?” Ava glared at Melinda.
“Was I? I’m sorry. I was just remembering something my homeroom teacher used to say in like sixth grade.”
“Oh. What was it?”
“It like doesn’t make sense out of context. It was just something that like popped into my head.”
Melinda followed Ava and Walter out of the library and across the street towards the dorm, listening to Ava chatter about her plans for her long weekend at home.
That night, Melinda was surprised to see Sarah sitting at her desk when she returned to her room. Melinda had stayed in the library until it closed, well into break time. She gave her roommate a puzzled look.
“Why aren’t you like in Stanton?”
“Oh, yay. You’re back. Break time.” Sarah jumped up and began pulling pajamas from her wardrobe.
“It’s like been break time. I’m late.”
“Why weren’t you at dinner?”
“I ate in town with Eliot after CCD. Why are you not in Stanton?”
“Larry told me not to like come over tonight.” The girls settled themselves on their beds, their backs against the wall facing each other. “He wants to like chat with Walter about Ava.”
“What about Ava?”
Sarah groaned. “She joined us for dinner. It was like pretty much torture. Larry and I made sure we did NOT do that thing you and Walter keep teasing us about. We made sure to like include Walter and Ava in our conversation. Except, Ava monopolized it by telling us about her day in like so much detail, it felt like it took longer for her to tell it than for her to like actually live it. Like I care what color socks her French teacher was wearing.”
Melinda giggled. “What color?”
“Green. I’m not sure why that particular piece of information stuck in my head, but it did. Anyway, Larry said something like how difficult his math class had been that afternoon and Ava jumped right in to like say how grateful she was that Walter had helped her with her math homework last night. And, she just like wouldn’t stop talking.”
“I like don’t see that side of her. Then again, I like only see her during study hours and we try to like not talk too much in the library.”
“I am trying really hard to like her, since Walter likes her, but I just don’t. I can’t put my finger on it. I thought maybe she was like a little too self-centered. Not that she like always has to talk about herself, but that she like wants everything to be about her. Like she needs a lot of attention.”
Melinda nodded slowly. “Yeah, I could see that. I had like a revelation today.”
“About what?”
“During the form meeting, I like was completely not paying attention. I was thinking about like Walter and Ava and I realized I was jealous.”
“Oooooh!”
Melinda threw a pillow at her roommate. “Not like that. I told you. I like Walter as a friend. But, Ava is like intruding on my friend time with him and that was making me jealous. But, then I thought about Larry.”
“Can’t have him. He's mine.” Sarah threw the pillow back at Melinda.
Melinda scrunched her face and stuck out her tongue. “Ha ha. No, I mean, he like intrudes on my friend time with you and I don’t mind because like he’s my friend, too. So then I thought that maybe if like Ava and I were friends, I wouldn’t be so jealous.”
Sarah shrugged. “I guess that makes sense. So, are you going to like try to be her friend?”
Melinda shook her head. “That was the second part of my revelation. I can be polite and maybe try to like engage her in a conversation, but I don’t think we could ever like be friends. We have nothing in common and I just kinda don’t like her. I can’t see myself hanging out with her without like Walter around.”
“I get the feeling she like feels the same way about you. She looks down on like a lot of people. Not so much me, because she like found out I’ve been to boarding schools for a long time. But, I can tell she like doesn’t think much of Walter being homeschooled and she really like doesn’t think highly of you going to public school.”
“She’s like really snobby, isn’t she? I don't like thinking that way, but…”
Sarah nodded. “Yeah, I feel like the same way. It’s more or less what I told Larry after dinner tonight.”
Melinda and Sarah let the conversation die out as they heard their prefect walking up and down the hall announcing that study hours were resuming. With a sigh, Melinda and Sarah moved to their desks to continue their homework until lights out.
2020.04.17 15:51 PhillipCrawfordJr Was FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover Gay?
M. Wesley Swearingen, an FBI agent from 1951 to 1977, writes in his memoir FBI Secrets: An Agent's Expose about the long-standing rumors within the Bureau concerning the relationship between FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and Associate Director Clyde Tolson which include allegations that Hoover ignored the Mafia for decades because the wise guys had incriminating goods on the supposed lovers:
One year after arriving in Memphis, Hoover transferred me to Chicago, Illinois. I was thrilled – my mind was full of gangsters, Tommy guns, and the FBI's famous machine gun battles of the 1930s. It was clear to me from Chicago's newspaper headlines that gansters ruled a Chicago underworld element in the 1950s because gangland style murders averaged close to 100 a year in the Chicago area. * * * But when I told my colleague and veteran agent Vince Coll of my big plans for Chicago, he said that Hoover did not recognize the existence of a mob in Chicago. According to Coll, Mafia leader Meyer Lansky's organization had enough on Hoover and Tolson, as closet homosexuals, that Hoover would never investigate the mob.
The allegations were fleshed out in Official and Confidential: the Secret Life of J. Edgar Hoover by Anthony Summer. A review of the book ("Partners For Life") by Sidney Urquhart for Time magazine summarizes one alleged incident as follows:
Perhaps Summers' most bizarre revelation is an account provided by Susan Rosenstiel, the wife of a liquor distiller and gambling crony. Rosenstiel recalls attending what she thought would be an elegant private party at New York City's Plaza Hotel in the company of lawyer Roy Cohn, Hoover and others. Instead, Cohn introduced Rosenstiel to a woman named "Mary," dressed in a fluffy black dress, lace stockings and high heels. It was obvious Mary was no woman. "You could see where he shaved. It was Hoover," said Rosenstiel. Joined by Cohn, Hoover stripped down to a tiny garter belt and proceeded to have sex with two young boys. Cohn later joked about the evening. "That was really something, wasn't it, with Mary Hoover?"
The "two young boys" with whom Hoover allegedly had sex perhaps were provided by Ed "the Skull" Murphy who was a long-time Genovese associate involved in the crime family's gay bar and boy prostitution rackets in New York City. In Stonewall: The Riots That Sparked The Gay Revolution, David Carter writes:
John Paul Ranieri, a former prostitute interviewed for this history, provided critical testimony for corroborating and better understanding the larger implications of Murphy's criminal enterprises for gay history. Ranieri said that as a youth from Westchester County he had been forced by blackmail and Mafia-supplied drugs into a prostitution ring in which he remained active for three years before he escaped the mob's control. He claimed that a number of youths in the ring had disappeared after they got careless with talk, for while most of the customers were more or less average homosexual men with money, the regular clientele, according to Ranieri, also included famous men such as Malcolm Forbes, Cardinal Spellman, Liberace, U.S. Senators, a vice president of the United States, one of the most famous rock musicians, and J. Edgar Hoover. The mob's order, according to Ranieri, was strictly "Keep your zipper open and your mouth shut."
Ranieri said that he met J. Edgar Hoover at private parties at the Plaza Hotel and that Hoover's name was never mentioned. Hoover was always in drag, and Ranieri said he could tell that the FBI director was sure that no one recognized him. Ranieri said that he had ensured his own survival by having in his possession a photograph of himself with Hoover, given to him by the photographer.
How does the preceding information link Ed Murphy with J. Edgar Hoover? The connection is made evident in a news story written shortly after Hoover's homosexuality and transvestism became public. When [Anthony] Summer's book [Official and Confidential: The Secret Life of J. Edgar Hoover], was published [in 1993], a newspaper story about the 1960s national homosexual blackmail ring suddenly appeared after a quarter of a century of silence on the subject. Without mentioning Murphy's name, it quoted law enforcement sources who had worked on the case as saying that their investigation into the nationwide blackmail ring had turned up a photograph of Hoover "posing amiably" with the racket's ringleader and had uncovered information that Clyde Tolson, Hoover's lover, had himself "fallen victim to the extortion ring." After federal agents joined the investigation, both the photograph of Hoover and the documents about Tolson disappeared. * * * Very suggestive in this context is that Murphy would publicly say in 1978—before it became public information, as it did in the 1990s, that the Mafia had photographs of Hoover involved in sex acts—that he knew that J. Edgar Hoover "was one of my sisters."
Murphy's boys did have a habit of disappearing. For example, one Puerto Rican youth known as Tano with whom Murphy was sexually involved was kidnapped right off the streets never to be seen again according to one eyewitness to the incident as recounted by Carter in Stonewall.
Curiously, Murphy also was a long-standing FBI informant according to a May 8, 1978 article ("Skull Murphy: The Gay Double Agent") by Arthur Bell for The Village Voice. Indeed, this article contained the interview in which Murphy expressly speaks of J. Edgar Hoover as one of his "sisters": "He was the biggest fuckin' extortionist in this country. He had presidents by the balls. He had a record on everybody and his brother."
The allegations that Meyer Lansky had incriminating evidence against the FBI Director are particularly credible in light of the relationships among all the parties with political fixer Roy Cohn -- a fellow closet case who died of AIDS in 1986 -- at the center of it all.
Cohn was a personal friend of Hoover during the 1950s and 1960s, and the two shared extensive correspondence directed to each other on a first-name basis including a September 1957 exchange on an article published by the Director entitled "Let's Wipe Out the Schoolyard Sex Racket." Ironically, only months earlier an apparent obscenity indictment against Cohn had been dismissed according to an FBI memo dated June 28, 1957 from Assistant Director Louis B. Nichols to Clyde Tolson:
Roy Cohn called 6-27-57 to advise that Neil Gallagher of the New Jersey Turnpike Commission represented him in connection with the return of an indictment charging the sale of obscene literature. Gallagher went before the Superior Court judge in Union County, New Jersey, Thursday afternoon and moved the dismissal of the indictment. The district attorney joined him in this recommendation and issued a public apology to Cohn.
Cornelius "Neil" Gallagher later became a U.S. Congressman from Bayonne, NJ until he lost the seat in 1972 after Life magazine ran an article alleging mob ties.
The relationship between Hoover and Cohn is particularly troubling given that the FBI was fully aware that Cohn had ties to the most powerful bosses in the Mafia. For example, in 1964 federal prosecutor Robert Morgenthau was trying Cohn on corruption charges, and at the trial introduced excerpts of earlier grand jury testimony by Cohn. A March 27, 1964 article from The New York Times which the FBI contemporaneously clipped for its files on Cohn states:
The excerpts contained admissions by Mr. Cohn that he was acquainted with Geralde (Jerry) Catena, described by the Senate Rackets Committee as "No. 2 Man" in the Vito Genovese unit of the Cosa Nosta, and with Meyer Lansky, gangster. Mr. Cohn said he scarcely knew Lansky but that he had played golf two or three times with Catena.
Cohn further had represented the Stork Club which was Hoover's favorite stomping ground and Schenley Industries which was one of the country's largest liquor distillers. Louis Rosensteil was the president of Schenley Industries, and he had close ties to Meyer Lansky and Frank Costello. "In fact, on several occassions, Hoover was seen at the Stork Club fraternizing with people like Costello and Rosensteil" according to Peter J. Devico in The Mafia Made Easy. After Hoover's right-hand man Louis Nichols left the FBI in 1957, Cohn allegedly secured him a plum job making $100,000 a year at Schenley Industries although Nichols insisted in Hooveresque fashion that Rosensteil shunned the mob.
Of couse, the best evidence that Meyer Lansky had the goods on the FBI Director is that the storied agency never laid a hand on the gangster who was a bootleg kingpin during Prohibition, later founded Murder Inc., and finally ran gambling operations in Las Vegas and Havana, Cuba for the Genovese family. At the time of Lansky's death in 1983 the FBI estimated that he had a net worth of $300 million, and yet during his long criminal career the G-men never nailed him on a single charge or recovered a single penny. Indeed, the FBI did not even start a file on Lansky until the 1950s, and a review of the file's sparse contents illustrates that the agency's efforts to target him -- a purported top hoodlum -- were half-hearted at best involving little more than the occasional wiretap and a sometimes surveillance. Indeed, the newspaper articles on Lansky which the FBI clipped were more informative on the mobster's activities than the investigator reports. Ironically, Lansky only was arrested in 1972 -- the same year Hoover died -- as a result of an IRS investigation involving an alleged skimming scheme from a Vegas casino, and even that indictment conveniently was dismissed because Lansky was considered too ill to prosecute.
2020.04.17 14:52 PhillipCrawfordJr Was FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover Gay?
M. Wesley Swearingen, an FBI agent from 1951 to 1977, writes in his memoir FBI Secrets: An Agent's Expose about the long-standing rumors within the Bureau concerning the relationship between FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and Associate Director Clyde Tolson which include allegations that Hoover ignored the Mafia for decades because the wise guys had incriminating goods on the supposed lovers:
One year after arriving in Memphis, Hoover transferred me to Chicago, Illinois. I was thrilled – my mind was full of gangsters, Tommy guns, and the FBI's famous machine gun battles of the 1930s. It was clear to me from Chicago's newspaper headlines that gansters ruled a Chicago underworld element in the 1950s because gangland style murders averaged close to 100 a year in the Chicago area. * * * But when I told my colleague and veteran agent Vince Coll of my big plans for Chicago, he said that Hoover did not recognize the existence of a mob in Chicago. According to Coll, Mafia leader Meyer Lansky's organization had enough on Hoover and Tolson, as closet homosexuals, that Hoover would never investigate the mob.
The allegations were fleshed out in Official and Confidential: the Secret Life of J. Edgar Hoover by Anthony Summer. A review of the book ("Partners For Life") by Sidney Urquhart for Time magazine summarizes one alleged incident as follows:
Perhaps Summers' most bizarre revelation is an account provided by Susan Rosenstiel, the wife of a liquor distiller and gambling crony. Rosenstiel recalls attending what she thought would be an elegant private party at New York City's Plaza Hotel in the company of lawyer Roy Cohn, Hoover and others. Instead, Cohn introduced Rosenstiel to a woman named "Mary," dressed in a fluffy black dress, lace stockings and high heels. It was obvious Mary was no woman. "You could see where he shaved. It was Hoover," said Rosenstiel. Joined by Cohn, Hoover stripped down to a tiny garter belt and proceeded to have sex with two young boys. Cohn later joked about the evening. "That was really something, wasn't it, with Mary Hoover?"
The "two young boys" with whom Hoover allegedly had sex perhaps were provided by Ed "the Skull" Murphy who was a long-time Genovese associate involved in the crime family's gay bar and boy prostitution rackets in New York City. In Stonewall: The Riots That Sparked The Gay Revolution, David Carter writes:
John Paul Ranieri, a former prostitute interviewed for this history, provided critical testimony for corroborating and better understanding the larger implications of Murphy's criminal enterprises for gay history. Ranieri said that as a youth from Westchester County he had been forced by blackmail and Mafia-supplied drugs into a prostitution ring in which he remained active for three years before he escaped the mob's control. He claimed that a number of youths in the ring had disappeared after they got careless with talk, for while most of the customers were more or less average homosexual men with money, the regular clientele, according to Ranieri, also included famous men such as Malcolm Forbes, Cardinal Spellman, Liberace, U.S. Senators, a vice president of the United States, one of the most famous rock musicians, and J. Edgar Hoover. The mob's order, according to Ranieri, was strictly "Keep your zipper open and your mouth shut."
Ranieri said that he met J. Edgar Hoover at private parties at the Plaza Hotel and that Hoover's name was never mentioned. Hoover was always in drag, and Ranieri said he could tell that the FBI director was sure that no one recognized him. Ranieri said that he had ensured his own survival by having in his possession a photograph of himself with Hoover, given to him by the photographer.
How does the preceding information link Ed Murphy with J. Edgar Hoover? The connection is made evident in a news story written shortly after Hoover's homosexuality and transvestism became public. When [Anthony] Summer's book [Official and Confidential: The Secret Life of J. 2020.04.13 23:43 lostboy411 LIRR Eastbound Work Commute Help
Hi everyone,
Sorry to ask a mundane and probably dumb question in the midst of the storm and the virus...but I'll be moving to NYC with my partner over summer for new jobs (good timing, right?). We don't have a car and we're trying not to buy one. I need to be able to get up to Westchester, and she needs to get to Garden City so we were looking at Queens & Brooklyn. But I can't figure out how eastbound LIRR trains work for her commute. The way they're running now won't matter since if we're still social distancing later in summer, we'll be working from home. (But need to think about moving soon in case social distancing ends before July)
For example, we were looking at Woodside (so I could take the 7 to GCT). Google Maps makes it seem like every branch stops there (it lists them all and they're on the mainline on the map). But when I try to map it via MTA or Google Maps, it seems like the Port Jeff line would be the only one she could take out of Woodside that would get her close to Garden City (where she'd then have to Uber), and it doesn't seem like the Hempstead line stops there eastbound (she'd have to transfer at Jamaica). Is there anywhere online that lists this? I don't know if I'm missing something, but I can't for the life of me figure out what Eastbound trains run out of Hunterspoint, Woodside, Forest Hills, Kew Gardens without having to transfer in Jamaica - unless you have to transfer in Jamaica when going Eastbound no matter what if you aren't starting at Penn? But then why could she catch the Port Jeff branch out of Woodside?
Sorry for the dumb question. I have a lot more experience with metro-north, Westchester, & Manhattan than with Queens, Brooklyn, and the LIRR.
tl;dr how do eastbound LIRR trains work when you aren't starting from Penn?
2020.04.11 20:34 under-thesamesun Social Distancing Assistance Request in Northern Westchester
Hi all,
I am planning on proposing to my partner while on a hike in Northern Westchester in the next two or three weeks. This is a drastic change from what I had originally planned (was meant to propose today at a museum in NYC, and for obvious reasons that is not happening).
I know this is a bit out there, but would any person be willing to take social distance appropriate photos? I have no friends or family in the area to ask.
Thanks
DIY face mask with BIKINI!( No sewing experience needed)
Hey Guys, I'm from Westchester NY and all face masks are sold out everywhere. I've seen so many people making their own so I wanted to share and help out but all the DIY Tutorials looked complicated and most needed a mask as a base! Or a template to measure. I wanted to use something that I already had at home and could easily modify it in 10m or less. I had an idea to make a mask out of my old bikini top. The reason being: 1. Fabric is extremely form fitting (great tight fit around nose/sides). 2. Stretchy bikini straps included to tie around your head 3. Precut slit/extra material on the inside that is for padding. Now you can use it to slip a HEPA filter or tissue paper inside. 4. Just need a needle & thread (probably you can use hot glue too) . 5. You can make two masks out of the bikini with cool patterns. Any beginner can do this. I've seen bra masks online but I think my bikini version is much better.
I can only sew on a button honestly so no experience is needed to make this face mask. Ladies go find your old bikini top or if YOU don't have one perhaps ask your partner or mother for one lol.
Directions: 1. Flipped the bikini upside down. 2. Tied the straps around my head. 3. Cut excess material on the bottom hanging, Pulled down & adjusted to my chin and closed the bottom with a needle and thread. (i'm sure you can also hot glue it) 4. This step is optional - You can sew/glue another strap on the side to make it tighter or look like a traditional mask. Its really easy honestly. I hope this can help someone out in need. There is a very high need for masks. It's definitely great for a grocery store run and perfect if you touch your face a lot! I think it gets the job done.. What do you think lol
PS: Hope im posting this in the right place lol. Edit: thanks guys for the comments! I would answer but I dont have enough comment karma points lmao.
2020.03.13 18:46 Craig_Selinger_NYC Managing Home Services During the Novel Coronavirus/COVID-19 Pandemic
The year 2020 has been an emotional year: Kobe Bryant and now the Novel Coronavirus pandemic. Our heads continue to spin and our emotions are high. What Kobe and the Novel Coronavirus share in common are risk tolerance and perceived risk. When emotions come into play, automatic decisions that we normally take for granted are magnified and even simple routines can suddenly become complicated. These choices, during this critical time period, impact our families and our neighbors.
Questions we need to ask ourselves are:
  1. How do we avoid burdening our hospitals?
  2. At what risk level are we for contracting the COVID-19?
  3. If we contract COVID-19, are we at risk of going to the hospital?
  4. If we contract COVID-19, are we at risk for death? How does the Coronavirus affect children and infants?
  5. If everyone eventually self-quarantines, at what point is it “safe” to leave your home? The virus will most likely be around through the spring and likely into the summer. Take into consideration that we expose ourselves to the flu. Here’s NY State’s Flu Tracker. John Hopkins has more information about the Coronavirus Disease vs the Flu. And here’s another article from the Science Daily: No, Coronavirus Isn’t ‘Just Like The Flu’. Here Are The Very Important Differences
  6. If you are at low risk for all of the above, what is the opportunity cost associated with quarantining yourself and your family for at least several months?
The Coronavirus has rapidly become a global disruptor. Nobody knows how long it will wreak havoc on our routines and some predict that the turmoil will extend into the summer. Countries around the world are reacting differently to the virus. Ireland and Isreal, for example, have closed down all of their schools and universities. Brits were told to self-isolate for a week if they have a mild cough or temperature.
The federal, state and local governments are enacting measures to slow the spread of the disease. Gatherings of 100 people or more are associated with increased risk. Since my companies Themba Tutors and Brooklyn Letters primarily serve families and clients at their New York City metro area homes, as Founder and CEO I am recommending that my staff protect themselves. At our in-person and at-home sessions, it is imperative that we also follow the Community Partners and the NYC Dept of Health guidelines. By the way, we work with all ages (primarily children and adolescents) and help individuals in need of speech, language, and feeding therapy by licensed speech-language pathologists and our learning specialists provide educational services for all skill levels to those who need help with their reading, writing, math, executive functioning skills and, in addition, to other services throughout New York City, Westchester, Long Island, Connecticut, and New Jersey.
To track this disease locally in NYC, please go to the NYC Department of Health website. Here they keep a tally of people who tested positive in NYC. At this time of writing, 95 people have tested positive in NYC. Michael Donnelly, an economist and data scientist, posted on Twitter, “due to undetected asymptomatic cases (17%-30%) and a low testing rate, we may only be detecting between 18.5%-33% of cases. The real number of current infections in NYC Metro is likely to be between 600 and 1,200 cases. Based on a NY Times OP-Ed, there’s little evidence that children are a significant source of the spread of the disease. But today, NYC shut down two adjoining public schools. In terms of worldwide mortality rates, more than 80% are elderly (over 60 years old), and more than 75% had underlying diseases present such as cardiovascular and cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and, in some cases, tumors. In New York City, the top concern is to avoid a hospital crisis.
Official Statement Regarding Covid-19 and Continued Services
Based on the current data, if any of our clients are 60 years of age or older or have any underlying diseases, we highly recommend that we work with them remotely.
Our staff and our clients are advised to stay at home if:
When you rule out all significant risk factors, we advise our staff and our clients to abide by much-needed control measures:
When working inside our clients’ homes:
For more information about handwashing, the CDC has a video on YouTube and here are steps to prevent illness.
Mayor De Blasio is trying to avoid a full City wide shutdown. If the City shuts down, we advise that all parties stay at home.
We are planning to continue with our regular schedules while maximizing safety for everyone. If our staff or clients want to discontinue in-home services, we respect that. Everyone has their own personal risk tolerance levels. However, everyone will need to decide what the opportunity cost will be if our new way of life is altered for the next 1-3 months.
Our Recommendations
  1. We do strongly encourage remote support services in place of in-home services, and we offer our clients a variety of HIPPA compliant therapeutic and educational remote options.
  2. Staff will contact our clients 24 hours before a session to check-in about their health.
Despite the onset of this disease, new clients are reaching out to us, and we plan to reach out to families in need of support services while taking safety as a number one priority.
Again, we will continue to monitor the situation closely. We understand that federal, state, and city policies can change in a heartbeat and will notify our staff and clients as they do. Please reach out to us via email or phone if you have any questions.
Schools and facilities will close for 2 weeks in this 1-mile containment area in a New York City suburb
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said a containment area will be set up in the city of New Rochelle as Westchester County works to stop the spread of coronavirus. Schools and facilities within will be closed for two weeks, and the National Guard will deploy to this area to help support the community.
Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zuckersaid the area is a circle with a radius of about one mile.
Starting on Thursday, facilities and schools within the area will be closed for two weeks. The National Guard will help deliver food to homes and clean public spaces in the containment area, Cuomo said, describing the plan as a "dramatic action."
This will go on through March 25.
“We’ll go in, we’ll clean the schools and assess the situation," Cuomo said. “This will be a period of disruption for the community.”
Cuomo described it as a “matter of life and death.”
New York is also setting up a satellite testing facility, partnering with Northwell Health, in New Rochelle, which is in Westchester County.
New Rochelle is “a particular problem,” Cuomo said, adding that “the numbers have been going up, the numbers continue to go up, the numbers are going up unabated.”
Cuomo stressed the shutting facilities in the area is a "dramatic action" that applies to “large congregate facilities for gatherings,” including schools and temples, but not "everything."
2020.01.22 05:14 DynamicUtopia 31 [M4F] #newyork #newjersey #connecticut
I'm a 31 year old heteroflexible Black man. I'm a 2nd year social work grad student looking to have a loving and vulnerable relationship with a woman. I exercise frequently, along with participating in leadership and self development programs. I write poetry, love to dance, play video games and watch animation just to name several of my interests. I'm down with 420.
My ideal relationship would be with a woman who also has wanted to be married and have children. Physical affection is important to me. My sex drive is high. I love to give and receive attention. I'm a switch so mutual service and submission is a turn on for me. I want to struggle for Dominance and at the same time, I'm free spirited so I'll go with the flow.
I live in Westchester County, NY so I'm in the suburbs of New York City. I drive so I can get to parts of Northern New Jersey, Putnam County, NY and Western Connecticut in an hour or less. That is what I am willing to do and I would love to connect with someone who wants the same. My preference is for BBW and I do not hold against actually meeting someone in person and possibly bonding. I can become attracted to someone's body by how they express themselves in speaking. My preferred age range for dating with the possibility of marriage is 21-42. I am also interested in dating much older women. One of my long distance partners is 30 years older than I am.
I hope to hear back. Feel free to message or DM me.
2020.01.14 15:37 sunboblive How easy to find nightly street parking/daily use of car? Any specific areas?
My partner and I are planning on moving to the area in April once our current lease is up. They work in Westchester and will need to have a car to drive to work every day, which should eliminate any alt-side/street cleaning issues.
I like to look at apartments available to have a feel for what we can afford. I usually look at apartments with parking available - either a garage or a dedicated spot - but they're typically $200-300 per month. Should I just ignore the parking equation and look at all apartments and assume street parking will be available? Or are there garages that are inexpensive for use every day (leaving around 6 AM and returning around 4 PM?)
