HAPPY NEW YEAR, CHARLIE BROWN – ABC and the PEANUTS gang will ring in the new year with the animated PEANUTS special “Happy New Year, Charlie Brown,” created by late cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, along with “She’s a Good Skate, Charlie Brown.” In “Happy New Year, Charlie Brown,” the PEANUTS gang is ringing in 1986, and Marcie and Peppermint Patty are throwing a big New Year’s Eve bash. Charlie Brown plans to celebrate the holiday by curling up with a big book that weighs nearly as much as he does, Tolstoy’s “War and Peace.” The book’s weight doesn’t stop him from lugging it to Lucy’s pre-party dance class, where he cuts a mean rug with a rollicking Patty. With just 1131 pages to go, Charlie Brown takes another break, this time for the party, and summons the courage to invite his true love, the little red-haired girl. She doesn’t respond, but hapless Chuck shows up anyway—with Tolstoy in tow. Then, he settles down with the book—on a porch swing in a snowstorm—and in so doing, misses the evening’s big surprise. In “She’s a Good Skate, Charlie Brown,” disaster strikes as Peppermint Patty heads to her first major ice-skating competition with coach Snoopy and faithful companion, Marcie, by her side. As always, the unassuming Woodstock flies in to save the day (8:00-9:00 p.m.)

2017.05.08 18:03 Dictarium [DISCUSSION] My Pop Essential Albums List: Version 2

A True Pop Essentials List, Version 2
The last time I made one of these was about a year ago and I did it in 2 days because of a spontaneous conversation I had with theallrightgatsby. This time, I've taken around three weeks spread out over a few months, and put more thought into it as well.
I've done my best to compile a list of albums that, if you listen to front-to-back, will give you a perfectly crisp view of what pop music is, what it was, and what it could be in the future (though, as you'll see with the drastic change that's happened throughout the course of pop history, this is very difficult to predict).
There are 179 albums here. For artists who are sufficiently important but don't have a solid album-length body of work, a "Greatest Hits" record has been used. Hyperlinked to every decade header, you'll find a collage of all the albums in that decade for your bookmarking purposes if you'd rather view them like that.
Every album here, in my opinion, meets one or more of four criteria:
  1. Too popular to ignore (e.g. Nevermind)
  2. Incredibly influential (e.g. The Man-Machine)
  3. Incredibly high-quality pop album (e.g. Make It Big)
  4. High-quality album exemplary of a pop sub-genre that deserves recognition (e.g. Take Off Your Pants and Jacket)
One last note, I think it's silly to call an album that isn't even 3 years old "essential". For this reason, my list only goes up to 2014. Carly stans will have to wait a year before she is up for her first ballot.
Before I talk anymore, let's get to the albums themselves.

that list is quite daunting. It's 179 albums, but at about 25 albums per decade early on and later going up to about 35 albums per decade, that's only about 2-4 albums per year which even then seems incredibly restrictive. But, regardless, you may be saying to yourself, "Self, that sure is a shitload of albums," and your Self may respond "Yeah, it is. Isn't there an easier way to get acquainted with pop as a genre?"
Yes, yes there is.
This time around, I'm including something I'm gonna call (for lack of a better name; suggest some in the comments if you think this one's shit) the "Platinum Essentials". This is a list of 50 albums picked from the list above that is a much more of a handshake than a hug with the pop genre, but should still give you a pretty good understanding of it.
Maybe once you've tackled those 50 albums, you can dive deeper into this list!
Anyway, here's the

Platinum Essentials List

"Golly gee. 50 still is an awful large number," you might be continuing say. I agree, it is! So what I've gone ahead and done is put together 7 playlists of all of the "Highlight" songs from the list that you can breeze through in, like, 11-12 hours.
Here they are:
Notes:
  • The Chronic is not on spotify. I've replaced a song from that with a song from Dr. Dre's 1999 album, 2001.
  • Taylor Swift's entire discography is not on Spotify. She is not included in the playlists as a result.

Fun Statistics

It's hard enough to make one essential pop album, but more than one?! That's crazy! Here's the artists who appeared multiple times on the list.

  • The Supremes
  • Sly & The Family Stone
  • Prince
  • George Michael (one with Wham!)
  • Janet Jackson
  • Eminem
  • Taylor Swift
  • Rihanna
  • Lady Gaga
  • Bruno Mars

  • Madonna
  • Britney Spears
  • Kanye West
  • Justin Timberlake (two with *NSYNC)
  • Beyoncé
Four Times
  • The Beatles
  • Michael Jackson (across three decades!!)
Five Times
  • Paul McCartney (four with The Beatles)
Here are the years with the most essential albums:
Seven Albums
  • 2007
  • 1967
  • 2012
Six Albums
  • 1995
  • 2006
  • 1982
  • 1977
  • 2010
Five Albums
  • 1994
  • 1983
  • 1971

Discussion

  1. Are there any glaring omissions in your eyes? Anything that has no business being here?
  2. How many of these albums have you listened to? As a frame of reference in case you're discouraged, I've only listened to 75 front-to-back and I made the damn list!
  3. What do you think makes an album "essential"?
  4. Starting next week (I think), I want to bring back the Essential Pop Album of the Week segment I used to do. What albums should I start out with? Also, the reason I stopped it before was because it was just annoying to do every week. If anybody wants to volunteer to do a particular album as a guest writer, let me know. I'll come up with a template of some kind and find a date for you or something.

2015.08.15 15:03 newhoa My grandpa loved bluegrass and had a good collection. Can you all help me sort it out and understand it better?

Hi, my grandpa was a huge fan of bluegrass and collected records since he was young. About 15 years ago he went to the local record shop and they converted all of his records to CDs. He liked this because he could listen to them in his car. He was a big sharer of music, and ever since I was a kid he would make copies of his music to share with friends. So when I showed him how to do this on the PC with all of his CDs, he loved it!
Later MP3 players came out, and I showed him that instead of taking one or two albums with him or fumbling with CDs, he could just take one device and have all his music and not have to worry about switching out discs and all of this. He went for it, and we spent a lot of time converting all of his music to MP3.
Anyway, he passed away several years ago. I was going through things that I haven't in a long time, and found his music collection!
I'm not sure which records he had converted to disc, but I know a lot of the music he collected seemed quite old and rare (I think many of his albums were shellac, which I know is quite old). I'm not knowledgeable enough to know what is what, which is why I'm here.
I was wondering if you all could help me understand his collection better? If a lot of it is rare, out of print, hard to find, or whatever... I would love to preserve and share it!
I made a simple directory list to browse through. If you all take a look at it and could help me out that would be wonderful.
Lists
Any help would be great. And if you all could point me in the direction of any resources, or other communities that would be interested, I would really appreciate it. I would ultimately like to make sure everything is properly labeled, dated, etc and share what I can.
Thanks in advance for any and all help!
Edit: I can add the artist tree here to save some time, but I think the other listings would be too long.

2014.10.16 16:21 pcgamingisted The White Stripes Guitar and Bass videos inside! Enjoy!

The hits continue! The hits continue! This time we're being hit square round the face and beaten to a bloody pulp by the rock duo Meg and Jack White of The White Stripes. Bassists beware though...
This weeks pack consists of 5 hit songs including The Hardest Button to Button and Seven Nation Army. However, this weeks pack does not consist of a bass chart for each song! Thankfully the notetrackers have given bass players something to play this week even if the actual song contained no bass. Let's give them a watch!
All songs are tuned to E Standard, except Seven Nation Army (Lead) which is Open A.
Fun Facts
Despite his success in The White Stripes, Jack White felt one bands success was not enough for him. So he went and formed a new band called The Raconteurs. But two bands was not enough for him. So he went and formed another new band called The Dead Weather. Still not happy with three bands under his belt, he embarked on a solo career and has worked with many artists including Beck, Bob Dylan, Loretta Lynn and Electric Six.
(Rocksmithers can now play 8 Jack White songs. 5 from this pack, Icky Thump from RS1, I Can't Hear You (The Dead Weather) from RS1, and Sixteen Saltines (Solo career) from RS2014)
On the flipside, the other half of The White Stripes, Meg White, is "very shy" by her own admission. She has kept a very low public profile throughout her career, and since the disbanding of The White Stripes in 2011 has not worked in the industry since. While on tour in support for their sixth studio album, Icky Thump, she suffered from acute anxiety, and the remaining dates of the tour were cancelled.
The song Seven Nation Army, along with being tuned to Open A, is also played using a slide. If anyone has played it using a slide, do let us know how it works in-game!
